Went for the first time tonight and I can't rate this anything less than a five. The service was friendly, fun, and fast. A refreshing change. The chips are the best and the salsa was great. My fajitas were great--savory grilled flavor with fresh tortillas. My wife liked her taco salad--above average. We've lived in CDA for 1.5 years and I wish I knew about this place before. We'll definitely return.

Traveling through the area and saw this place has high ratings. I am from Arizona and have consumed my fair share of Mexican food, and this place ranks right up there. I was a little nervous at first as it is a hole in the wall location, but the food and service were amazing. The waitress was very attentive and friendly. The food was delicious, I couldn't get enough of the salsa let alone the meal. And be sure to check out their margaritas! Next time I pass through I will definitely be returning!

very disappointed in this place. The guacamole was more like bland pea soup and the beans and rice tasted like they had been boiling for hours in the same pot. No toilet paper in the ladies room, either. Big bummer....nice service though. Guess that's a plus...?

The food was absolutely wonderful, but was nothing compared to the compassion the owner showed us, and our children. They love their guests, and it truly shows. We were visiting from out of town, but when we come back, we'll definitely give them our business again. Thank you very much!

Came into town after driving for 12 hours so I was just trying to get something cheap and quick. This was one of the only places that was open so I figured "why not". I went in and it was one of the most pleasant experiences. I just ordered to go but they brought out some chips and water for me while I waited. And then before I could even finish the chips he put in two more bags of chips in with my food. I went back to the hotel and ate the food. It was good. If I ever come here again, I'd definitely go here again.

I found my way to Las Chavelas after reading other Yelp reviews. I'm very glad that I did! It was a Sunday and there were only two servers working, so the service was a bit slow, but they were working their tails off getting around to all the tables. The chips and salsa were terrific. The chips are homemade, as are the mild and hot salsas that they were served with. I ordered the Plato El Brazero and it came plenty hot temperature-wise and was full of flavor. It is not a dish for someone that doesn't have a big appetite. It comes with a giant burrito served enchilada style and three carne asada tacos with rice and beans. Very tasty. I don't live in Coeur d'Alene, but will definitely eat here again the next time I'm in town.!

Great food and friendly, courteous and prompt service! Try dishes in the traditional mexican section of the menu and you will not be disappointed. The service was very quick as well. Do not judge this place by its exterior. The interior is simple but we found the food to be much better than places we've eaten in bigger cities.

OK Mexican food for Northern ID. I'm originally from Southern California where real good Mexican food is commonplace. It's been difficult to find equivalent Mexican food in this part of the country. With that being said, Las Chavelas was one of the better Mexican restaurants I have found so far in Northern Idaho. Moreover, I thought the wait staff was friendly and their service was pretty fast. I would go back again.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurants in North Idaho. The crispy shredded beef tacos are outstanding and the salsa is always fresh. Sometimes less is more in this place does it well.

I been eating Mexican food since the day I was born so I expect a lot from Mexican food restaurants. I came to Chavelas with great expectations. The service is great super friendly and welcoming. The salsa were great and the chips are awesome fresh made. You can taste it... The pico de gallo is fresh and delicious. Now, the main course... didn't like it all. Super disappointing! I order a chile relleno and a taco. My chile relleno wasn't a chile it all and it was not fill with anything! My beans were can beans, the rice wasn't fresh and my taco has been fried about 3 times already the meat inside of the taco is super old. The flavor was not bad it was just not the great food can be done.

To be honest, I was really expecting great food. I got the opposite. After a long day at Silverwood all we wanted was to eat some great mexican food. A few of us got the carne asada, and it wasn't even cooked all the way. A friend of mine ,who also had the carne asada, found a hair in her lettuce. When we told the waiter she told us that it must have fallen off my friends head. (Who does that?) We then asked for the manager, our waiter happened to also be the manager. She was rude and unproffessional. I've worked in a restaurant and customer service for over 6 years and that is never ok. So, with our meals practically untouched, we got our tab. The waiter/manager took $3 off our bill. REALLY?!? She proceeded to say we took $3.00 off your bill since she ate some of the beans and rice. Mind you, she had one bite of food. I guess my point is... Not a good mexican restaurant at all, poor service and discusting food. I will not recommend this place.

First things first. The chips and salsa are fresh made daily and are the best I have ever eaten - hands down! Secondarily, the food is from old family recipes and not out of a can. I have eaten in this establishment 100's of times. Normally my wife and I make it there at least once a week. Everyone in my extended family even loves this place too. This facility is not the fanciest in the world but you will be served some of the best Mexican food in the world when you visit. Don't expect your fajitas to be served on a fancy sizzling hot platter. Instead they are served fully cooked on a normal platter the way they do it in Mexico. Their re-fried beans are made fresh daily as well as their rice. The shredded roast beef is tender, juicy and fully flavored. The chicken is actually freshly cooked shredded chicken and not turkey (that many of the competitors use because it's cheaper). The pork is soft and tender with plenty of flavor. The Super King Burrito earns it's name without question. You won't go away hungry from this establishment, that I guarantee you. The staff is friendly and willing to serve even when they have a packed house. If I ever hit the Lottery, I will financially back the owner of this establishment open a chain of these restaurants. That is how well I like this place. Oh, by the way. My wife and I use this Mexican restaurant to judge other Mexican restaurants when we travel around the country. Finally, we must travel 20 miles to eat here and it is definitely worth the drive to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho from Spokane Valley, Washington. I have never heard anyone complain about anything they have been served becuase if there is something wrong. Tony makes it right without question. I did once hear someone complain because their fajitas not being served on a sizzling platter.

Food is ok. chile verde is not really chile verde and it wasn't spicy at all ( disappointing ) ... Service is good an friendly Mexican food was not really authentic to my point of view... It would be nice to variety of salsas to chose from from hot to mild...

las chavelas is muy delicioso!!! tony is great, not sure if he is the owner, but its well worth him serving you if he's there. not saying the rest of the staff isn't good, i've just had the pleasure of tony taking care of us - he's warm and fuzzy, but still tough and to the point. and the food is amazing!!! everything i've tried, and everything that has been tried by the people i've been with has been so so so good. i wish i could eat here everyday. mmmm.... i might need to go back manana!!! ;)

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
